Support for enhanced recovery after surgery protocol in colorectal surgeries
Almost three years ago, Lincoln Surgical Associates' Kevin T. Barnett, MD, FACS, implemented the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol for colon surgeries, which is currently in use Memorial Hospital Belleville, Memorial Hospital East, and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. In May of this year, JAMA Surgery published a study that looked at the association between ERAS protocols in elective colorectal surgery and patient outcomes. It found that there were fewer complications in patients who received care at a facility that had "a high adherence rate" to the ERAS protocol.
