Parathyroid Gland Abnormalities Are Often the Cause of Elevated Bloodstream Calcium Levels
If your elevated calcium levels are due to a parathyroid disorder, Lincoln Surgical can explain your surgical options in a way that's easy to understand.
You have four parathyroid glands. If one or more are causing the elevated calcium levels, you may need to have them removed.
Hyperparathyroidism is the condition that causes elevated calcium levels. Symptoms of elevated calcium range from none to problems such as osteoporosis, kidney stones, fatigue, and other conditions.
If parathyroid gland removal is necessary, you may need to be on a calcium supplement for a period of time after surgery, and your doctor will need to check your calcium levels for about six months following surgery.
Although you have four parathyroid glands, you only need half of one to regulate calcium levels.
The parathyroid regulates the calcium in the body. Half of a parathyroid gland is enough to regulate calcium; if all are gone you’ll take oral calcium replacement the rest of your life.—Dr. Aach
