Thyroid removal may involve all or part of the thyroid. The three most common procedures we perform are lobectomy, sub-total thyroidectomy, and total thyroidectomy. If you have a thyroid problem, thyroid surgery may be the option for you. How much of your thyroid needs to be removed depends on your particular thyroid problem.

Lobectomy

The thyroid is made of a left lobe and a right lobe. When a lobectomy is performed, only one of the lobes will be removed.

Sub-Total Thyroidectomy

A sub-total thyroidectomy involves removing one lobe of the thyroid completely and a large part of the opposite lobe.

Total Thyroidectomy

A total thyroidectomy is the removal of both thyroid lobes.

The most common surgery performed on the thyroid is lobectomy, meaning removal of one side or the other. This is done for nodules that are usually non-cancerous. —Dr. Aach
