Cutting Edge News: First Surgery at Memorial Hospital East

Kevin Barnett, MD, FACS, operated on two patients first day hospital was open

Lincoln Surgical Associates’ Dr. Kevin Barnett was the first surgeon to perform a surgery at Memorial Hospital East when it opened on April 12. Dr. Barnett removed a neck mass and performed a laparoscopic gallbladder removal.

Dr. Barnett has been involved in many aspects of bringing Memorial Hospital East to the Metro East. In addition to being on the Board of Directors, Dr. Barnett is the vice president of the Medical Executive Committee. He and James Clanahan, MD, FACS, president of Lincoln Surgical Associates, are involved with the Surgical Services Executive Committee for Memorial Hospital Belleville and have been part of a sub-committee for Memorial Hospital East surgical services.

“It was during one of those meetings I was asked if I wanted to do the first surgery,” Dr. Barnett says. “I was honored to perform the first surgery at Memorial Hospital East and to work with such an enthusiastic OR staff.”

“Memorial Hospital East was designed for the patient experience,” added Dr. Clanahan. “The operating rooms are state of the art, and Lincoln Surgical looks forward to expanding and providing surgical coverage services at the new hospital. When St. Elizabeth's opens in O'Fallon, we look forward to taking the lead in surgical services there as well. Our goal is to provide comprensive surgical services, so patients don't feel like they must go to St. Louis when they have all the services they need right in their back yards.”
