Hernia Symptoms in Women

Contrary to what you might think, women can develop painful hernias.

Hernia symptoms can range from a bulge under the skin to pain in the affected area. So pain can occur in the groin area, upper leg, back, vagina, or at or near the navel. The pain can be minor or very severe and either long-lasting or occasional. However, because the symptoms can be mistaken for issues like cysts, fibroids, or endometriosis, some women may be misdiagnosed. If you think you are being misdiagnosed it is okay to seek a second opinion. The end goal is to find out the source of your pain and treat it.

Femoral Hernia

One other type of hernia is a femoral hernia, which is very rare type of hernia that usually only occurs in women. This will look like a small bulge around the groin or thigh and may be caused by straining. Because a femoral hernia is so small you may not know you have it until it becomes an emergency situation. In this case, you may have symptoms including stomach/groin pain, nausea, and vomiting. If you do experience these symptoms call 911 or go to the emergency room.
