The treatment of thyroid disorders often involves an ultrasound guided biopsy (FNA) and in some cases removal of part or all of they thyroid gland. Removal of parathyroid glands might be indicated for a disorder of elevated calcium levels caused by diseased parathyroid glands.

Common Procedures by Endocrine Surgeons

Lobectomy
The thyroid is divided into two lobes: the left and the right. The most common surgery performed on the thyroid is a lobectomy, which is the removal of one lobe. This procedure is most often done to remove suspicious nodules that are then proven to be non-cancerous.

Sub-Total Thyroidectomy
A sub-total thyroidectomy is the removal of all of one side of the thyroid and the majority of the other side. This procedure may be performed to remove a cancerous or non-cancerous nodule, a nodule that is restricting breathing, or, in rare cases, to treat hyperthyroidism.

Thyroidectomy
A total thyroidectomy, which is the removal of both lobes of the thyroid, is usually performed for documented cancer.
